The Many Tools of a Phlebotomist

There are many tools and programs through phlebotomists in the modern medical environment. The main duty of a phlebotomist is to draw blood, or perform what is called venipuncture. After taking blood from a patient, the phlebotomist labels the glass container to document the specimen and makes all of the associated records before the blood goes off for analyses or transfusion. The gloves, head cap and gown are a tremendous set of tools for phlebotomists. Other phlebotomy tools include tourniquets, holders or adapters, gauzes, sponges, bandages and tape. Tourniquets are used to stop bleeding or control blood flow into the test tube, and holders or adapters connect the sample to the evacuation collection hose. And obviously, a phlebotomist must have gauze, sponges and adhesive bandages on hand to patch the site where the blood withdrawal was just taken to prevent any further blood loss.
